My partner and I traveled to Rome for 5 nights in early September. This was our first visit to Rome and we chose this B&B for its location close to the Vatican Museums. Little did we know we had made one of the most outstanding choices of accommodation in 7 years of travel in Europe. The location is 3 or 4 blocks from the Vatican Museums and St. Peters is no more than a 10 minute walk. The Metro stop is 2 blocks from the B&B on the “A” line, (stop is Ottaviano) from Rome’s Termini rail station. We loved our room which had an en suite bathroom with a great shower and plenty of hot water. A/C worked perfectly but was needed only several hours each evening as the window could be opened.
This is a true B&B! There are only 2 rooms, and they were carved out of the owner/hostess’s rather large Rome apartment. The building was built in the early 20’s and has a large private courtyard. The star of this property is the owner, Matilde Pavone. Other than the privacy of your room which is separate from her living quarters, you really get the feeling that you are staying with a friend in Rome. There is free wifi and the breakfast offerings are very adequate. Breakfast is served in the salon or living room of the owner and this creates a very special and very personal experience.
Matilde gave us excellent recommendations for restaurants she enjoys and we particularly loved one called “Gallo Brillo” just 2 blocks around the corner. Everything you want to see in Rome is easily accessible from this location. We were given very welcome assistance in booking our tickets for the Vatican Museums, The Borghese Galleries, our train travel onward to Florence and to several museums in Florence. Matilde is such an incredible hostess that it is hard to convey her level of intelligence, charm, and her innate understanding of hospitality without having the experience yourself. She is the real deal and you leave feeling sad to go, but very much aware of having had a real Roman experience. She even loaned us her copy of Rick Steve’s guide to Rome which an appreciative guest had given her as a gift. We had purchased the guide but left it home by accident.
The location felt very safe and we walked at night a great deal. From everything you hear about Rome I was surprised at how safe we felt walking just about anywhere. If you are visiting Rome do yourselves a favor and choose this B&B. We found it to be a really remarkable experience and feel like we have made a friend. Definitely will be going back.
